Man Charged After Horror Crash at Liverpool FC Victory Parade
A 53-year-old man has been formally charged after a car ploughed into crowds celebrating Liverpool FC’s Premier League win, injuring over 60 people including a nine-year-old child, the Crown Prosecution Service confirmed.
Paul Doyle, from Liverpool, faces charges of dangerous driving, causing grievous bodily harm with intent, and wounding with intent following the terrifying smash on Water Street in Liverpool city centre on Monday, 26 May 2025.
Dozens Hurt in Parade Carnage
The crash happened during the city’s jubilant celebrations with thousands lining the streets. Police report 65 people injured, more than 50 taken to hospital, and seven still receiving treatment as of Wednesday.
Victims range from 9 to 78 years old, all believed to be British nationals. The Royal Liverpool University Hospital was among those treating casualties. Medical staff praised their quick response as “very, very fortunate,” given the potential for even greater disaster.
Chaos and Courage Caught on Camera
Shocking footage shows panicked crowds confronting the driver before he suddenly accelerated, crashing into barriers on both sides of the street. Eyewitnesses tried to chase the car, some even kicking and smashing its rear window moments after the impact.
Investigators believe the car slipped past a roadblock by temporarily following an ambulance attending a heart attack emergency. The roadblock lifted, allowing the vehicle access behind emergency responders – a deadly loophole.
Police Vow Justice as Nation Mourns
Detective Chief Superintendent Karen Jaundrill said,
“This was a deeply distressing incident during what should have been a moment of celebration for the city. We are committed to securing justice for those affected.”
The Crown Prosecution Service charged Doyle on Wednesday 29 May. He remains in custody and will appear in court soon.
