London Fire Commissioner Andy Roe Calls Time After Five Years

London Fire Commissioner Andy Roe is hanging up his helmet after five impactful years at the helm. The veteran firefighter, who joined the London Fire Brigade (LFB) 23 years ago, told Mayor Sadiq Khan of his decision to retire, ending an era of major reforms and operational overhauls.

A Storied Tenure of Change and Challenge

Roe reflected on his time leading the LFB:

“It has been an honour and a privilege to lead London Fire Brigade. Over the past five years, supported by the Mayor of London, I have been able to lead significant change and improvement – from how we respond to emergencies to transforming our culture. Our people are now better trained and equipped for their mission to serve and protect London.”

The Greater London Authority (GLA) has begun the hunt for his successor, with Roe’s final day yet to be confirmed.

Mayor Sadiq Khan Pays Tribute

The Mayor praised Roe’s leadership, saying:

“Andy Roe has done an outstanding job as Commissioner. Under his watch, the LFB has transformed, improving performance and restoring Londoners’ trust. The Brigade is now faster at responding to emergencies, rated outstanding for handling major incidents, and has delivered all Phase One Grenfell Tower Inquiry recommendations.”

Roe’s Legacy: Top Achievements

  • Grenfell Tower Inquiry: Roe’s team was first to complete all 29 Phase One recommendations, boosting high-rise firefighting, evacuation training, and introducing tech like drones and turntable ladders.
  • Cultural Reforms: An Independent Culture Review led to new Brigade values and a Professional Standards Unit tackling racism, misogyny, and homophobia.
  • Operational Excellence: In 2024, HMICFRS gave the LFB multiple ‘good’ and ‘outstanding’ marks for performance under Roe.
  • Pandemic Response: During COVID-19, 500 firefighters became ambulance drivers, LFB delivered millions of PPE items, and handled over 156,000 calls.
  • Community Engagement: Roe launched a Community Forum, including Grenfell survivors, to support those affected by emergencies.

The Road Ahead

Andy Roe said farewell with pride:

“I never imagined joining LFB 23 years ago that I’d one day serve as Commissioner. I’m proud of all we’ve achieved, thanks to the courage and determination of our people. There’s still work to be done, and I’m confident the Brigade will continue improving and modernising.”

His retirement signals a new chapter for the London Fire Brigade, which aims to build on his legacy of reform and excellence.
