Brave Cops Tackle Knife-Wielding Man in Fiery Stand-Off Near Aylesbury
Officers Face Knife Attack and Fire Havoc
In April 2021, four firearms officers – PC Richard Fenemore, PC Lee Sullivan, PC James Dalton, and PC Steve Hall – raced to a risky scene near Aylesbury. A man had barricaded himself inside his home, armed with a knife. Negotiations began, but tension soared when officers caught the smell of smoke.
Smoke and Flames Close In
Forcing their way into the smoke-filled room, the officers found a fire spreading. While dousing the flames, the man lunged at them with his knife. PC Dalton explained the chaos:
“Thick black smoke was pouring out of the room, but everyone in the team knew exactly what they needed to do. While I was trying to clear the barricade the man came at me with a knife and my colleague Tasered him. It was ineffective, but it distracted him enough that we managed to gain entry to the room, and we got the man on the floor.”
Despite the Taser failing to fully subdue the attacker, the officers wrestled him to the floor. Meanwhile, the man harmed himself with the knife, forcing them to wrestle the weapon away amid rising flames.
Crime and Courage Rewarded
The man was charged with attacking police and arson, receiving a 3 year and 4 month prison sentence. valley-police/" title="Thames Valley Police" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked" data-wpil-monitor-id="4585">Thames Valley Police Federation Chair Craig O’Leary praised the officers’ bravery:
“These officers showed great courage while being threatened with a knife and dealing with a fire, and they managed to save the man’s life. Police officers run towards danger when others run away from it, and I’m pleased that we can celebrate these officers’ brave actions in this way.”
Bravery Awards Coming Up
PC Dalton added: “We’re surprised about being up for the Award, but we’re looking forward to the ceremony and appreciate the recognition.” The four officers will attend the 2022 Thames Valley Police Federation Bravery Awards on 28 April, where an overall winner will be named.
