Brave cops battle blaze and knifeman in dramatic Aylesbury stand-off

Fiery Siege Ends in Knife Attack

In April 2021, four firearms officers—PC Richard Fenemore, PC Lee Sullivan, PC James Dalton, and PC Steve Hall—rushed to a tense scene near Aylesbury. They were called by Local Police Area officers after a man armed with a knife barricaded himself inside his home. As the officers negotiated, they suddenly caught the smell of smoke.

Race Against Flames and Fury

Forcing their way in, the officers found the room ablaze and the man increasingly violent. While battling the spreading fire, the suspect lunged at them with a knife. One officer deployed a Taser, which didn’t stop him but bought crucial seconds.

“Thick black smoke was pouring out of the room, but everyone in the team knew exactly what they needed to do,” said PC Dalton. “While clearing the barricade, the man came at me with a knife and my colleague Tasered him. It was ineffective, but it distracted him enough for us to gain entry and get the man down. While securing him, he was cutting his own hands, so we had to wrestle the knife off him amid the fire growing behind us.”

Life-Threatening Ordeal Ends With Arrest

Despite the chaos, officers successfully detained the man and removed him from the smoke-filled, burning room. The suspect had also inflicted life-threatening injuries on himself. He was later charged with assaulting officers and arson, receiving a prison sentence of three years and four months.

Hats Off to Heroic Officers

Police run towards danger when others run away. We’re proud of James, Richard, Steve, and Lee.”

The four officers will be honoured at the 2022 Thames Valley Police Federation Bravery Awards on April 28, where an overall winner will be named.
