Kent Police and Banks Join Forces to Smash Scammers
On Tuesday 17 August 2021, Steve Kelly, Kent Police’s Prevent and Protect Fraud Officer, teamed up with bank staff to fight back against fraudsters. They handed out leaflets and gave customers hard-hitting tips to avoid falling victim to scams.
Bank Staff Trained to Spot Scammers – And Act Fast
Bank workers across Kent are primed to spot the warning signs of fraud. Thanks to the UK-wide Banking Protocol, they can alert police instantly if they suspect a customer is being conned. This often leads to swift police action, sometimes resulting in arrests on the spot.
Just days before the campaign, a fraudster from Ashford was jailed for four years for trying to steal a vulnerable pensioner’s life savings. The crook tried to swipe £200,000 by posing as the victim with an elderly accomplice at a local branch. Thanks to suspicious staff, the scam was stopped cold and police stepped in.
“We Catch All Kinds of Scams,” Says Police Fraud Officer
“Many scams have been intercepted due to this partnership including courier scams, romance fraud, and rogue traders,” said Steve Kelly. “We have dedicated officers running talks and sharing daily advice on social media. Kent residents can also sign up for scam alerts to stay one step ahead.”
“Some of the most vulnerable may never go online or meet others. Neighbours need to watch out for them — remind them not to let anyone pressure them into suspicious work or large cash withdrawals. Real businesses don’t drive you to banks and push you to withdraw big sums.”
Kent Residents Saved Almost £1.8 Million in 2020
UK Finance stats reveal fraud prevention efforts saved Kent people nearly £1.8 million last year alone. Lucy Kirkbride, HSBC UK’s Canterbury branch manager, stressed the power of education.
“Fraudsters prey on trust, pretending to be the bank or other trusted bodies. Customers need to ‘Take Five’—stop and think before handing over personal info or money. We’ll never ask for passwords or PINs or to transfer money to ‘safe accounts.’ If unsure, always call your bank on the number on the back of your card.”
