Drug-Fuelled Driver Jailed for Killing Motorcyclist on M25 Bridge
A man who took cocaine before causing a fatal crash has been locked up for 32 months. Harry Carpenter, 29, admitted causing death by dangerous driving at Guildford Crown Court on Friday, 30 June.
Crash Details: Deadly Collision on M25 Bridge
The shocking smash happened at 2.40pm on 1 January 2022. Carpenter was driving his Ford Ranger 4×4 northbound over the M25 bridge at Dorking Road, Walton-on-the-Hill. He swerved into the wrong lane, clipping a red Citroen DS3 before smashing head-on into a Harley Davidson motorbike.
Tragically, the biker, 60-year-old Christopher Brandham, died at the scene despite the desperate CPR efforts of passersby.
Drugs Behind the Wheel
Carpenter admitted taking cocaine the night before the crash. A roadside drug test confirmed he was over the legal limit, with toxicology showing 128mg per 100ml of breath — more than one and a half times over the allowed level.
He was arrested at the scene for driving under the influence and later charged with causing death by dangerous driving.
Police Condemn Reckless Driving
“Carpenter took cocaine then chose to get behind the wheel, with devastating consequences,” said PC Matt Lloyd of the Serious Collision Investigation Team. “His actions cost a man’s life, whose only crime was being on the same road. Our sympathies are with Christopher Brandham’s family and friends as they try to come to terms with their loss.”
“This sentence should remind all drivers that taking drugs or drink before driving is never worth the risk. It can cost lives.”
Sentencing and Driving Ban
Carpenter was disqualified from driving for 46 months and must pass an extended driving test to get back behind the wheel. The jail term and driving ban send a strong message against drug-fuelled driving on UK roads.
