End to Horn Hell: Quiet Zone Declared on A20 Near Dover

Aycliffe residents near Dover can finally expect some peace and quiet. A new quiet zone on the A20 will ban loud lorry horns from 11:30am to 7am the next day. Any HGV drivers caught blaring horns during these hours face fines. This trial is part of the Dover Traffic Assessment Project (TAP), which controls heavy goods vehicle traffic around the congested port.

Horn Tooting Torment at Last Set to Stop

For years, frustrated lorry drivers trapped in traffic have made life miserable for locals with constant honking – causing sleepless nights and unrest. National Highways has now stepped in, creating a nearly mile-long quiet zone from Court Wood Interchange near Capel-le-Ferne to the Western Heights Roundabout, the key road into Aycliffe.

“Whilst we look at broader solutions, we have agreed we will implement a quiet zone along the A20 leading up to the Port which will run throughout the summer deployment of Operation Brock,” said Nicky Potts, Head of Operational Integration at National Highways.

Strict Fines and Clear Signs to Enforce Silence

Signs warning drivers about the quiet zone are going up this week. National Highways is teaming up with haulage firms, ferry operators, and police to enforce the ban. Lorry drivers ignoring the no-horn rule risk a £60 fine. Meanwhile, Operation Brock’s contraflow system is handling the summer surge at the port, with stricter £300 fines for HGVs that break rules at M20 Junction 8.

Plan Ahead: Expect Delays at Dover and Eurotunnel

Summer holiday traffic is expected to create gridlock, with delays of up to two and a half hours due to tougher post-Brexit French border checks. National Highways urges travellers to check with operators, allow extra time, and prepare for hold-ups. The contraflow system will stay for roughly two weeks during the peak holiday period.

This quiet zone is a win for Aycliffe, ending years of noise headaches and creating a calmer environment. National Highways and the Kent Resilience Forum will keep monitoring Operation Brock and traffic flows to keep communities safe and local life disruption-free.
