Driver Jailed for Christmas Day Crash That Killed Woman
Nathaniel Ritchie, 34, from St Pauls Road, Salford, has been sentenced to three and a half years in prison at Chester Crown Court on Thursday, 9 June. He was found guilty of dangerous driving after a tragic crash on Christmas Day.
Fatal Collision on A536 Macclesfield Road
The court heard that Ritchie was driving an Audi RS5 to buy soft drinks after celebrating Christmas at home. Realising the shop was likely closed, he turned around to head for a petrol station in Congleton. On his way back, he sped around a left-hand bend on the A536 and veered into the opposite lane.
Ritchie’s car collided with a white Volkswagen Up, driven by 46-year-old Lakshmi Basford from Rainow. Lakshmi died at the scene. Ritchie was arrested and charged with dangerous driving.
Police and Family React to Verdict
“The family of Lakshmi have been waiting over two years to receive justice following her tragic death,” said Police Constable Nick Anderton, lead investigator.
“Christmas Day is a time for celebrating and being with your family – sadly Lakshmi’s family will never experience this again due to Ritchie’s reckless actions.”
“Ritchie has caused Lakshmi’s family to relive her last moments through the trial. I hope this sentence brings them some comfort knowing he is behind bars.”

Lakshmi’s family, who attended the trial, expressed their sorrow: “No sentence passed can ever reflect the loss we continue to suffer.” They thanked the police, especially PC Anderton and PC Hilton, family liaison officer, along with the prosecution team for delivering a sense of justice.
“Lakshmi was such a beautiful, kind and gentle lady who had many years of life to live. Our lives will never be the same and we miss her greatly.”
