Tragedy in the Channel: Three Migrants Dead as Rescue Mission Launches
Disaster Strikes Off French Coast
A major search and rescue is underway in the English Channel after three migrants drowned trying to cross from France to the UK. The fatal incident happened near Cap Gris-Nez, northern France, this afternoon.
Patrick Leleu, deputy prosecutor at Boulogne-sur-Mer, revealed the migrants fell into the water and were pronounced dead despite frantic rescue efforts. Authorities are investigating the heartbreaking circumstances.
Deadly Crossing Amid Stormy Seas
Dozens of migrants risked the perilous journey through strong winds and thick fog – conditions that made the Channel more dangerous than ever. This tragedy adds to a growing list of desperate attempts to reach UK shores.
A UK Government spokesperson confirmed French officials are leading the search and probe but declined further comment.
Surge in Migrant Crossings Strains Authorities
The rescue operation involves both UK and French teams. Reports say a fourth body has been spotted floating in French waters. Smugglers have exploited poor weather to send multiple small boats off French beaches.
Today alone, up to six boats crossed into UK waters. More than 300 migrants were processed at dover/" title="Dover" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Dover Harbour’s Border Force centre — the largest single-day landing in February since 2018.
Ongoing Challenge for Border Officials
Earlier, around 50 mainly male asylum seekers arrived at the Port of Dover, rescued by Border Force catamarans and clad in orange life jackets. The surge highlights the relentless struggle to clamp down on people-smuggling and make crossings safer.
Official figures show 2,006 asylum seekers have crossed the Channel so far in 2024, underlining the urgent need for stronger border security and deeper solutions to migration pressures.
