Seven Sentenced in Major UK Sex Trafficking Bust
Seven traffickers have been slammed with jail time at Sheffield Crown Court for running a brutal sex trafficking ring across Newcastle, Doncaster, Ilford, and Norwich. The gang targeted 14 Romanian women between 2016 and 2019, tricking them into the UK with fake job offers before forcing them into prostitution.
The victims, women in their 20s and 30s, suffered horrific physical, sexual, and financial abuse. Their traffickers controlled every aspect of their lives and stole their earnings.
Police Crack Cross-Border Crime Network
The convictions followed a five-year crackdown by South Yorkshire and Romanian police, backed by the National Crime Agency, Northumbria Police, and Europol. Authorities uncovered a ruthless franchise-style operation by tracking phone records, cash flows, and vehicles carrying victims.
In November 2019, six suspects faced charges including human trafficking, money laundering, and controlling prostitution. A seventh suspect was arrested the following July.
Sentences Handed Down After Guilty Pleas
All seven defendants pleaded guilty during a five-week trial in 2024 and were sentenced on April 25, 2025:
- Valentin Badica (39) and Cristian Damaschin (35) from Newcastle – 2 years and 8 months each.
- Ionica Badica (34), Newcastle – 2 years and 2 months.
- Mihaela Matei (28), Ionut-Leonard Bahica (38), Adrian Cioroaba (33), and Iuliana Mavroian (41) received suspended sentences between 11 months and 1 year 10 months, plus unpaid work and rehab orders.
“This has been an extensive investigation that has led to the successful shutdown of a dangerous organised crime group,” said Detective Sergeant Rachael Smith. “The bravery of the victims and the dedication of investigators made this outcome possible.”
Modern Slavery: A Growing UK Crisis
The UK continues to battle modern slavery, with the Salvation Army rescuing 230 victims in the North East between July 2021 and June 2022 alone. The Modern Slavery Act 2015 sets tough penalties, including up to 18 years behind bars for the worst offenders.
In 2018, the National Crime Agency reported 98 suspected trafficking victims in the North East—40 of them children. Exploitation often targets vulnerable people facing poverty or immigration struggles.
Support & Prevention: Fighting Back
The 14 victims rescued in this case now receive specialist help in Romania to rebuild their lives. Groups like the Salvation Army and Newcastle City Council offer safe housing, counselling, and rehab services.
Police, councils, and charities work closely to protect survivors and stop re-exploitation. Businesses such as Newcastle United are also required to ensure their supply chains are free from slavery under transparency laws.
Officials urge the public to stay alert. To report suspicious activity, call the Modern Slavery Helpline on 0800 0121 700.
Justice Served, But Vigilance Needed
This sentencing is a crucial victory against modern slavery, showing that cooperation and persistence can shut down ruthless trafficking rings. But the fight to protect vulnerable lives from exploitation must continue.
