Abdinasir Elmi, 26, a Somali long-distance runner desperate to stay in Britain, has been arrested over serious sex offences. The athlete, who’s been breaking personal bests and turning heads this year, faces accusations of sexual assault by penetration and intentional strangulation.

The alleged attacks took place on April 22, 2025, in Bournemouth’s Lower Gardens and Central Gardens. Despite still awaiting the outcome of his asylum claim, Elmi has been training with Bournemouth Athletic Club and even competes internationally for Bahrain.
Elmi Denies Charges, Trial Set for Next Year
Last month, Elmi appeared in magistrates’ court and was remanded in custody. His trial is scheduled for February at Bournemouth Crown Court. The runner vehemently denies all the accusations against him.
