First West Midlands Man Convicted of Riot After Tamworth Holiday Inn Chaos

A 25-year-old Staffordshire man has made unwanted history as the first in the West Midlands to be convicted of riot. Mitchell Cleaver, from Morleys Hill, Burton upon Trent, pleaded guilty to riot at Stafford Crown Court yesterday. The charge stems from violent disorder at the Holiday Inn in Tamworth this August. Cleaver faces sentencing on 11 November 2024.

From Violent Disorder to Riot: Cleaver’s Role Revealed

Cleaver was originally charged with violent disorder. However, after a thorough review, prosecutors upgraded the charge to riot due to his significant involvement. CCTV footage and witness accounts show Cleaver hurling objects and spraying a fire extinguisher at police officers trying to protect the hotel and guests.

Two Others Also Face Court Over Tamworth Violence

  • Martin McCluskey, 60, of Manor Road, Tamworth, pleaded guilty to violent disorder and two counts of assaulting an emergency worker. He is due for sentencing on 30 October 2024.
  • Tommy McQuaker, 29, of Madrona, Tamworth, also admitted violent disorder. His sentencing date will be set later.

CPS Warns of Tough Justice After ‘Appalling’ Violence

Emily Lenham of the Crown Prosecution Service said, “Mitchell Cleaver played a significant role in the violence that unfolded at the Holiday Inn. The level of unlawful violence meant a riot charge was the only suitable response.”

She added, “The CPS in West Midlands works closely with Staffordshire Police to ensure all responsible are held to account. We hope these convictions deter others from similar unacceptable behaviour.”
