Social Worker Jass Bassi Given Suspended Sentence for Punching Partner
A Derby man who punched his partner in the face has escaped jail with a suspended sentence. Jass Bassi, 63, met the woman while working as her social worker before starting a relationship. But their eight-year romance was marred by violent abuse, including a brutal punch that left her nose deformed.
Abuse Uncovered Years Later
The shocking violence only came to light in 2019 when the victim bravely reported the historical abuse to police. Bassi faced eight charges: five counts of causing actual bodily harm and three counts of grievous bodily harm. Sentence: Suspended Jail and Community Orders
On Friday 3 November, Bassi was handed an 18-month prison sentence, suspended for two years. He must complete a three-month curfew, rehabilitation activities, and 100 hours of unpaid work. The court also ordered him to pay £500 compensation to his victim.
Police Praise Victim’s Bravery, Urge Other Victims to Speak Out
“This was a violent and unprovoked attack which caused a very painful injury to the victim,” said Detective Staff Investigator Jayde Wilson. “She continues to suffer with mental, physical and emotional trauma. I praise her bravery throughout the court case and hope she finds closure.”
“I encourage any other domestic abuse victims to come forward – no matter when the abuse happened, we will listen and investigate without judgment.”
