Sussex cop cleared of all sexual assault charges after high-profile trial
PC Lee Willis found not guilty
Sussex Police officer PC Lee Willis, 49, faced serious allegations of sexually assaulting two female colleagues while on duty. But after a tense trial at Southwark Crown Court, the Brighton-based cop was acquitted of all three counts of sexual assault by touching. The jury delivered a unanimous verdict of not guilty on Friday, 9 May.
Allegations from early 2023
The court heard the claims involved incidents dating back to January and February 2023. Willis was accused of inappropriate touching during separate on-duty encounters with two female officers. However, the jury was unconvinced and concluded the prosecution had not proved the case beyond reasonable doubt.
Suspension and misconduct probe loom
Willis, who had been suspended since the allegations surfaced, now faces an internal review. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) initially handed the investigation to Sussex Police’s Professional Standards Department. With the criminal case closed, the force confirmed it will consider misconduct proceedings under internal regulations.
“While we respect the outcome of the court, any allegations of this nature are taken extremely seriously. A decision on misconduct matters will follow in due course,” said a Sussex Police spokesperson.
Public confidence hangs in the balance
The case attracted intense public scrutiny, raising questions about trust in the police. External watchdogs closely monitored the trial and investigation, reflecting widespread concern over conduct within the force.
Neither PC Willis nor his legal team has issued a statement since the verdict.
