Street Cleaner Joins Police Chase to Nab Violent Attacker in Bognor Regis
A Sussex Police officer pulled off a daring move by commandeering a street cleaning vehicle to chase down a violent criminal in Bognor Regis.
On Sunday, 26 February 2023, Peter Lock, 51, fled on his bike after assaulting a woman on High Street. Sharp-eyed council workers helped point police in the right direction.
One officer first gave chase on foot but soon flagged down the street cleaner to close the gap. The bold move paid off — Lock was caught and arrested shortly after.
Victim Hospitalised After Brutal Attack
The 48-year-old woman suffered serious injuries to her face and hands and was rushed to hospital for treatment.
Lock, from Linden Road, was charged with actual bodily harm (ABH). In court at Lewes Crown Court on 7 May 2025, he pleaded guilty and was handed 18 months behind bars.
Police Praise Quick Thinking and Public Support
Chief Inspector William Keating-Jones praised the officer’s resourcefulness and the help from council workers, saying:
“Pursuing suspects requires rapid decisions and sometimes creative ideas. We are grateful to the council worker for their help in capturing this violent criminal.”
The arrest highlights how teamwork between police and the public can lead to swift justice.
