Teen Terror Plot Foiled: 17-Year-Old Jailed for 10 Years
A 17-year-old from West Yorkshire has been locked up for a decade after plotting a chilling terror attack. Joe Metcalfe, from Haworth, was convicted of 11 offences, including preparing an act of terrorism and three counts of rape.
Right-Wing Extremist Plans Uncovered
Metcalfe’s heinous plans were uncovered by Counter Terrorism Policing North-East (CTP NE), who swiftly intervened before any attack could happen. Arrested in June 2022, investigations revealed his extreme right-wing beliefs and admiration for international terrorists through his digital search history.
The Leeds Crown Court jury found him guilty on March 30, 2023, of preparing an act of terrorism aimed at targeting Muslims at a nearby mosque. Metcalfe even planned to film the attack dressed as an armed police officer. Thankfully, police stopped him in his tracks.
Multiple Rape Convictions Upheld
In addition to terrorism charges, Metcalfe was tried at Leeds Youth Court where he was found guilty of three rapes and controlling/coercive behaviour. His October 2023 appeal was firmly rejected.
“Metcalfe acted alone but posed a real threat to society,” said Nick Price, Head of CPS Special Crime and Counter Terrorism Division. “His violent beliefs showed he was far from just a troubled teen.”
Police Urge Public to Stay Alert
Detective Chief Superintendent James Dunkerley of CTP NE praised the quick police response and urged the public to report anyone showing extreme views or hatred.
“Trust your instincts and reach out via the ACT Early website at www.actearly.uk. Early intervention can stop dangerous behaviour before it escalates,” he said.
Temporary Chief Superintendent Richard Padwell of Bradford promised continued support to local communities, especially Muslims, and stressed the importance of vigilance.
“Public safety is our priority. Our Neighbourhood Policing Teams are ready to help with any concerns in confidence,” he added.
