Croydon’s New Crime-Busting Tech Nets 10 Arrests
Policing in Croydon just got a high-tech upgrade. Officers teamed up with the Territorial Support Group (TSG) and deployed cutting-edge Live Facial Recognition (LFR) during a major crackdown on violence, especially targeting crimes against women and girls. Alongside tech use, officers patrolled, stopped and spoke to locals, boosting community confidence.
Facial Recognition Flags 22 Alerts, 10 Arrested
The LFR system scanned faces in key areas against police watchlists, triggering 22 alerts— every single one spot-on. This led to the arrest of 10 individuals for serious offences including threats to kill, recall to prison for robbery, and possession of offensive weapons.
Officers also stopped eight people subject to sexual prevention orders, ensuring they were sticking to their conditions. Four more were checked for compliance with other court-imposed restrictions. No false alarms were recorded.
Crossbow and Knives Seized in Crime Sweep
During the pro-active operation, cops caught a 24-year-old man in North End carrying a crossbow and a pocket knife. This arrest adds to the clampdown on dangerous weapons across Croydon.
Chief Supt. Praises Community Backing
Chief Superintendent Andy Brittain: “We’ve been out chatting with Croydon locals and businesses about yesterday’s LFR operation. Their support is fantastic. We know crime worries many, so it’s vital to show the tactics we’re using and reassure them we’re listening and taking firm action.”
Lindsey Chiswick, head of LFR at the Met, added: “Live Facial Recognition is a razor-sharp, community-focused crime-fighting tool helping us target robbery and violence. Non-matches are instantly deleted, protecting privacy while boosting safety.”
