HGV Driver’s Dangerous Police Chase Ends in Jail
Jason Standley, 42, dared to play a deadly game with police along the A1 near Cropwell on the evening of 2 November. When ordered to stop his Iveco HGV, he slammed the accelerator instead – careering dangerously close to officers in pursuit.
Tyres Punctured But Chase Continues
Police fired a Stinger device, expertly deflating Standley’s tyres. But the rogue driver kept going for several more minutes before ditching the lorry near Fernwood, Newark.
Found Hiding, Caught and Banned
After abandoning his vehicle, Standley was spotted hiding in the undergrowth by a vigilant security guard at a nearby service station. Officers swooped, arresting him on the spot.
Standley, from Crofton, later pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and driving while disqualified. At Nottingham Crown Court on 5 December, he was slammed with a 19-month prison sentence and slapped with a six-year driving ban. To get back behind the wheel legally, he’ll have to pass an extended driving test.
Police Praise Security Guard and Team Effort
“This was an extremely dangerous display of driving that could very easily have resulted in serious injury to police officers or other road users,” said PC Haddon Smith of Nottinghamshire Police’s Roads Policing Unit.
“An HGV driven this recklessly put everyone at risk, so ending this pursuit quickly was vital. This was an excellent team effort. I want to particularly thank the brave security guard who helped officers detain Standley and bring him into custody.”
