Teen Jailed for Stabbing Dad-of-Four Outside Home
James Gibbons, dubbed ‘Gibbo’, was fatally stabbed four times outside his Laindon home on Sunday, 2 May. The 34-year-old dad-of-four was celebrating his twin daughters’ birthday when tragedy struck.
The killer, 16-year-old Joshuah Sparks from Armada Close, claimed he carried a knife to protect himself after a confrontation with James. But at Chelmsford Crown Court, prosecutors tore apart this defence during a five-week trial. Sparks was found guilty of murder and sentenced today to 13 years behind bars, plus lifetime licence.
Justice Served After Heartbreaking Loss
The court lifted restrictions on naming Sparks, citing open justice. James’ partner, Vicky Billingham, expressed gratitude to Essex Police and the prosecution. She said:
“No amount of time the defendant gets will ever be enough. We will be mourning James forever, especially my children who now face a harsh future without their dad. But I am thankful the system worked and we got justice for our beloved James.”
Senior Investigating Officer DCI Louise Metcalfe, who led the case, praised her team’s dedication. She said:
“James’ family have seen justice today. Sparks has shown no remorse for taking a much-loved dad’s life. This sentence reflects the gravity of his crime. Our thoughts remain with James’ family as they face a heartbreaking first Christmas without him.”
Callous Killer’s Chilling Snapchat Messages
After the murder, Sparks confessed in a Snapchat chat: “I don’t care, I’m a psychopath… I’ve just M someone off… I might as well go and kill everyone else I don’t like.”
Despite this chilling admission, he tried to claim self-defence in court. The prosecution demolished this excuse, showing James was the victim who lost his life after defending another man from nearby troublemakers.
Family Pay Tribute and Launch Knife Crime Campaign
James’ family have thanked emergency services, Essex Police, the prosecution team, liaison officers and victim support for their efforts. They described James as a loving son, devoted father, and heroic protector of the vulnerable.
They added:
“James was a hard worker who wanted only to provide for his family. His life—and our future—was stolen by a senseless act.
The family have launched Justice4JamesG on Facebook and Instagram to raise awareness of knife crime and support others affected.
They concluded:
“Now it’s time to grieve and lay James to rest in peace.”
