Shamima Begum’s Bid to Return UK Sparks Legal Battle
Six years after fleeing the UK to join Islamic State, former schoolgirl Shamima Begum is fighting to reclaim her British nationality. Stripped of citizenship by the government, the 21-year-old remains trapped in a Syrian camp, banned from returning home.
Supreme Court to Decide if Begum Can Return to Challenge Citizenship Revocation
Five Supreme Court justices will rule on whether Begum must be allowed back to the UK to properly challenge the Home Office’s decision. Her legal team argues she should automatically regain citizenship if denied a fair hearing while stuck in a guarded Syrian camp.
Currently, Begum cannot speak with lawyers or join court hearings by video due to her remote location under armed guard.
Sajid Javid’s Controversial Citizenship Stripping Under the Spotlight
Back in 2019, then-Home Secretary Sajid Javid revoked Begum’s citizenship after ISIS’s collapse. Last July, the Court of Appeal sided with Begum, ruling she was denied a fair chance to contest the decision.
The government quickly took the case to the Supreme Court for a final say, with Friday’s judgment set to have wide-reaching effects on Begum and others in similar situations.
Sun Newspaper Escapes Contempt Charges After Leaking Court Ruling
In a related twist, the Attorney General’s Office confirmed they will not pursue action against The Sun for leaking the Court of Appeal’s “Return of Traitor” judgment in July 2021.
The article, quoting government sources, was swiftly pulled after lawyers intervened. Publishing court judgments before official release typically invites hefty fines and contempt charges. But, after careful review, the Solicitor-General decided not to proceed against the paper.
“After very careful consideration the solicitor-general concluded that contempt proceedings will not be instigated on this occasion,” said an Attorney General spokesman.
