Man Faces Murder Trial Over Toddler’s Shocking Death in Edinburgh
Lukasz Czapla, 41, stands accused of brutally killing toddler Julius in November 2020 at a Muirhouse home. Court heard he allegedly shot and smothered the young boy.
‘Willing to Admit Killing’ But Denies Murder
Czapla signalled he was ready to admit the killing. His lawyer, Iain McSporran QC, said if the court rejected a plea of culpable homicide (a lesser charge), they would push a special defence claiming Czapla had “diminished responsibility” at the time.
“He should be convicted of culpable homicide rather than murder,” McSporran argued.
But prosecutor Alan Cameron slammed the offer as “not acceptable.” Czapla must face a full murder trial, the Crown declared.
Horrific Details of the Attack Emerge
- The 2-year-old, born May 2018, was reportedly hit repeatedly with a skewer or similar object.
- Court heard Czapla fired an air pistol at the child multiple times — including shots to the head.
- He allegedly smothered Julius with a pillow, causing asphyxiation.
The prosecution insists these brutal acts amount to murder.
Additional Charges: Dangerous Driving and Drug Possession
Czapla also faces several other allegations from the same date, November 21, 2020:
- Driving while over the drink-driving limit in Edinburgh.
- Driving under the influence of prescribed medication.
- Reckless speeding and dangerous overtaking on the A90.
- Failing to give way on the A90/M90 slip road, forcing other drivers to take evasive action.
- Collision with another vehicle.
- Possession of ecstasy, LSD and an air weapon.
Czapla denies all charges. The trial is ongoing at Edinburgh High Court.
