Man accused of murdering toddler in Muirhouse faces serious charges
41-year-old admits killing but denies murder
Lukasz Czapla, 41, is on trial for the brutal killing of toddler Julius in November 2020 at a house in Muirhouse, Edinburgh. The court heard that Czapla was willing to admit the killing but wants to plead guilty to a lesser charge of culpable homicide, claiming “diminished responsibility” at the time.
His lawyer, Iain McSporran QC, told the High Court the plea hinges on this special defence. However, prosecutor Alan Cameron rejected the offer, insisting the case must go to trial for murder.
Horrific details revealed in court
- Julius, born in May 2018, was allegedly assaulted with a skewer or similar instrument.
- Czapla is accused of repeatedly shooting the child in the head with an air pistol.
- He then allegedly smothered Julius with a pillow, causing asphyxiation.
Prosecutors say these actions led to Julius’s death and amount to murder. The chilling charges emerged on the first day of Czapla’s trial.
Additional charges paint a troubling picture

- Driving under the influence of alcohol in Edinburgh on 21 November 2020.
- Consuming prescribed medication, speeding dangerously, overtaking and undertaking on the A90 road.
- Failing to give way on the A90/M90 slip road, forcing other drivers to take evasive action.
- Colliding with another vehicle.
- Possession of drugs, including ecstasy and LSD, and an air weapon.
