HM Coastguard Marks 200 Years of Heroism at Sea

From humble coastal lookouts to a cutting-edge national rescue network, HM Coastguard has been saving lives for two centuries. Since its official founding on 15 January 1822, the service has stood as a steadfast guardian of the UK’s shores, searching, rescuing, and saving those in peril on land and sea.

Throwlines Cast to Honour Legacy

Today, in celebration of its 200th birthday, coastguards across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland are casting throwlines — vital lifesaving gear — into the seas at 11am. This symbolic gesture highlights their ongoing commitment to maritime safety, carried out with strict adherence to current COVID-19 guidance.

Modern Heroes with High-Tech Tools

Over the years, HM Coastguard has grown exponentially. In 2022 alone, 310 Coastguard Rescue Teams and 3,500 volunteers operated from 10 helicopter bases to tackle emergencies around Britain’s coastline. The recent £175 million upgrade to its national radio network now uses fibre technology, ensuring lightning-fast, reliable communication that saves lives.

The service is also going green, rolling out electric vehicles to shrink its carbon footprint. Six electric models have been trialled and purchased, with 19 more on the way as part of a drive to electrify the fleet over the next five years.

From Smuggling Crackdown to Lifesaving Pioneer

HM Coastguard’s roots lie in the 17th and 18th centuries when smuggling plagued Britain’s coastlines. Early efforts to curb illegal imports included the Preventative Water Guard, established in 1809 to patrol bays and fight smugglers. In 1822, three anti-smuggling agencies merged to form the Coastguard, creating the foundation of the modern lifesaving force.

Voices of Leadership

“Congratulations HM Coastguard on their 200-year anniversary. I am immensely proud and humbled by the dedication and professionalism of all staff and volunteers who keep our shores safe,” said Maritime Minister Robert Courts.

“We celebrate the innovation and courage shown throughout our history,” stated Claire Hughes, Director of HM Coastguard. “But above all, we honour the people—our staff and volunteers—who have never stopped answering the call of those in distress.”

Coastal Operations Area Commander Tom Wright added, “Casting the throwlines today symbolises our unwavering commitment to keeping everyone safe at sea.”

As HM Coastguard sails into its third century, it promises to lead with technology, teamwork, and tenacity — always ready to rescue the next life in need.
