Two Men Found Guilty Over Fatal Bradford House Fire
Deadly Arson Attack on Family Home
In the early hours of 21 August 2024, Bradford was rocked by a brutal arson attack. Sharaz Ali, 40, and Calum Sunderland, 26, deliberately set fire to a house on Westbury Road. Police say the pair filled a petrol canister at a Keighley station, drove to the property, and ignited the blaze. Sunderland kicked down the door while Ali drenched the home in petrol. Inside were mother Bryonie Gawith, 29, and her three children: Denisty, 9, Oscar, 5, and toddler Aubree Birtle, just 22 months old.
Tragic Deaths and Arrests
The fire quickly engulfed the house. Despite heroic rescue attempts, Bryonie and her children died from their injuries. Ali was caught at the scene, badly injured, and spent months in hospital. CCTV footage helped police track down Sunderland, who was found hiding in a basement in Keighley.
Convictions and Upcoming Sentencing
- Sharaz Ali found guilty of four counts of murder and one count of attempted murder.
- Calum Sunderland convicted of four counts of manslaughter.
