Brighton & Hove cracks down on engine idling with £40 fines from January

New anti-idling rules kick in January

Brighton & Hove Council is taking a hard line against engine idling to fight air pollution. From 2 January, drivers caught leaving their engines running while parked will face a £40 fine. The decision was made by the City Environment, South Downs & The Sea Committee back in June.

Idling pumps out dangerous pollution

Idling engines spew out carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, and harmful particulates – sometimes twice as much as moving cars. This toxic cocktail poses serious health risks, especially for asthma sufferers and those with lung conditions.

Where and how the new rules apply

  • The ban covers vehicles parked in bays, taxi ranks, and other roadside spots.
  • Environmental Enforcement Officers will patrol and issue Fixed Penalty Notices (FPNs) on the spot.
  • Officers will inform the driver, and if they refuse to cooperate or drive off, authorities will track the vehicle for a fine by post.
  • A prompt payment discount is available: pay within 10 days and the fine drops to £20.

Council urges drivers to switch off

New signs across the city flash the message: “Cut engine, cut pollution” to remind drivers of the new law.

Councillor Tim Rowkins, chair of the Committee, said: “Improving the city’s air quality is crucial, especially for those with respiratory issues like asthma. Enforcing engine idling rules will help reduce harmful emissions. We’re urging all motorists to switch off when parked and help keep our air clean.”
