Police Officers Attacked Twice in Maidstone on Same Night
It was a chaotic Thursday night in Maidstone as two police officers were assaulted in separate incidents just hours apart. The violent encounters happened on 27 May 2021, leaving officers injured and suspects in custody.
First Attack: Man Assaults Officer During Arrest
At around 6.55pm, police arrested a man linked to an assault on a woman in Brunswick Street. The suspect, Callum Geary, 25, from Dickens Road, Maidstone, turned aggressive during custody. He injured a constable’s arm in the scuffle.
When taken to hospital, Geary allegedly spat directly into an officer’s eyes—a shocking attack on an emergency worker. He now faces two counts of assault by beating emergency workers, plus two more assaults, theft, and criminal damage charges.
Second Incident: Racial Abuse and Spitting in Fremlin Walk
Just a few hours later, at around 9.30pm, officers were called to Fremlin Walk following reports of racial abuse. John Devall, 37, of no fixed address, was shouting threats and racial slurs at the public.
Devall was arrested nearby but didn’t stop there. He is accused of spitting on a female police officer’s neck and a member of the public. While at hospital, he reportedly continued his torrent of abusive behaviour. Devall has been charged with assault, assault on an emergency worker, and two counts of racially aggravated harassment.
Bail and Court Dates Set for Both Men
Both men were remanded in custody and appeared before Maidstone Magistrates’ Court on 29 May. Devall was granted bail and is due back in court on 7 June. Geary was also bailed until his next hearing on 5 July.
