Bradford Duo Sentenced for Deadly Street Race Crash
Two Bradford men have been handed jail sentences after a dangerous driving incident claimed the life of a 20-year-old passenger in May 2020.
Fatal Crash at Haworth Road Junction
Usmaan Zahoor, 22, and Waqas Iqbal, 34, faced Bradford Crown Court today for their roles in a multi-vehicle collision at the junction of Haworth Road and Chellow Grange Road on 27 May 2020.
The crash involved three vehicles and tragically resulted in the death of Zahoor’s passenger, Junayd Haris, who later died in hospital from his injuries.
Jail Time for Reckless Driving
Zahoor, from Northfield Place, was sentenced to seven years and four months after admitting causing death by dangerous driving.
Iqbal, hailing from Brantwood Crescent, received five years after being convicted of the same offence.
Police Warning After Deadly Competitive Driving
Detective Sergeant Paul Lightowler of West Yorkshire Police’s Major Collision Enquiry Team said:
“Our investigation found that both men engaged in competitive driving just prior to the collision.
“I hope that Zahoor and Iqbal use their time behind bars to consider the recklessness of their actions and how they ultimately resulted in the death of a young man.
“I also hope this serves as a warning to others of what can happen when people choose to drive in this way.
“Our thoughts remain with Junayd’s family at this time and I hope that this outcome will provide them with some comfort.”
