Met Police Dog Sniffs Out AK-47 in South London Sting

Two men have been jailed for eight years after a Met Police dog uncovered an AK-47 assault rifle in South London. Umar Pervez, 23, from Croydon, and Kyal Truong-Clarke, 25, from Beckenham, were sentenced at Kingston Crown Court on August 8.

Guilty of Gun Conspiracy and More

  • Both Pervez and Truong-Clarke were convicted on May 10 of conspiracy to transfer and possess an illegal firearm and ammunition.
  • Truong-Clarke also pleaded guilty to possessing cannabis with intent to supply.

Police Dog Leads Officers to Firearm

On August 6, 2021, officers acting on a tip-off spotted Pervez carrying a holdall on Mitcham Common. When stopped, the bag was gone. Using police dog Chase, officers searched the area and found the holdall containing an AK-47 assault rifle, magazine, and ammunition.

Pervez was arrested on the spot. Further investigation revealed he had been in contact with Truong-Clarke, who had asked how much the gun could sell for.

Met Police Crack Down on Violent Crime

“I have no doubt this weapon would have been used to kill or seriously injure someone on London’s streets,” said Detective Chief Inspector Stephen Masterson, Specialist Crime Command.

“I am relieved we have eliminated that risk. The Met is committed to tackling violent crime, with a 28% drop in gun discharges since last year.

“This case shows the hard work of detectives going to any lengths to disrupt organised crime and tackle illegal firearms.”
