Two Met Cops Guilty of Assaulting Teen During Hospital Trip
Two Metropolitan Police officers have been convicted of assaulting a 16-year-old boy they were taking to hospital for a mental health check. The shocking incident happened after no ambulances were available, sparking outrage and calls for police accountability.
Shocking Abuse on Mental Health Call
At Westminster Magistrates’ Court, PC Sevda Gonen, 33, was found guilty of two counts of assault by beating. Her colleague, PC Stuart Price, 35, was convicted of using unlawful force. Both officers belong to the North Area Basic Command Unit.
The court heard that during a search of the teenager on 14 November 2023, PC Gonen slapped the boy and yanked his hair. PC Price was found guilty of unlawful force during the same search.
Apology and Fallout
Area Commander Hayley Sewart apologised to the victim and his family for the distress caused. She said:
“We know this incident had a significant impact on the victim and his family, and I would like to apologise to them for the distress and upset caused. Very sadly, what started out as an attempt to get the right medical attention for a teenager in mental health crisis quickly escalated to the events we saw unfold that day.”
Commander Sewart slammed PC Gonen’s actions as “deeply troubling” and “well below the standards we expect from our officers.”
Investigation and Next Steps
The case was referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) after an internal police review raised concerns. The Met Police confirmed they will now work with the IOPC on misconduct proceedings.
- PC Sevda Gonen is currently suspended.
- PC Stuart Price remains on restricted duties.
Both officers await sentencing on Thursday, 24 January 2025.
