Postmasters Offered Up to £600k After Horizon Horror Scandal

Government U-Turn on Post Office Wrongful Convictions

The UK Government has taken a massive step to right a decades-old wrong. Postmasters wrongly convicted based on faulty Horizon accounting software are now being offered compensation of up to £600,000.

This bombshell comes after 86 convictions were quashed and £21 million already handed out in payouts. The move aims to finally bring closure to hundreds who suffered wrongful prosecutions from 1999 to 2015.

Horizon Blunder Left Postmasters Ruined

The Post Office’s Horizon system, launched in the late 1990s, was riddled with glitches that caused apparent financial shortfalls. Postmasters were unfairly blamed for missing cash—some even jailed for false accounting and theft.

The fallout was brutal: shattered reputations, lives torn apart, and financial ruin. The government’s fresh compensation offer seeks to ease that pain and deliver proper justice.

More Money for Victims, Legal Costs Covered

  • Postmasters who already took partial settlements or initial payouts can now claim the balance up to £600k.
  • Legal fees will be covered throughout, ensuring access to justice remains free.

Post Office Minister Kevin Hollinrake said, “This is about righting a wrong and providing relief. Too many postmasters have suffered for too long. We are committed to seeing this through and making sure it never happens again.”

Inquiry Underway to Prevent Repeat Scandals

The government has also set up the Post Office Horizon IT Inquiry. Armed with statutory powers, it’s probing the disaster to uncover facts and recommend future safeguards.

So far, compensation schemes, legal actions, and government payouts have handed over £120 million to nearly 2,600 impacted individuals. The new offer speeds up payments and extends help to any Postmaster who might overturn convictions in the future.

Justice may be served late, but with this huge payout pledge, the government is finally making amends for one of the UK’s worst miscarriages of justice.
