Jailed Fugitive Flees Prison Van on Busy M55 Near Preston

An urgent manhunt is underway after Jamie Cooper, 33, escaped from a prison transport van this morning on the M55 motorway near Preston.

Prisoner Fakes Illness, Breaks Free at Junction 2

Cooper was being taken to Lancaster Magistrates’ Court when he reportedly faked a medical emergency. Taking advantage of the distraction, he overpowered his escort officers and bolted from the vehicle near Junction 2 at Catforth, Preston. Prison transport company GEOAmey confirmed the dramatic escape.

Lanashire Police received the escape report around 8.54am and launched a high-priority search operation across the area.

Public Alert: Do Not Approach Dangerous Fugitive

Cooper, from Blackpool" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Blackpool, is described as 5ft 7ins, medium build, with short cropped hair. He was last seen wearing a blue coat, blue jeans, and black trainers.

Police have warned the public: do not approach him as he may be dangerous. Anyone who spots Cooper should call 999 immediately.

“We understand this news may be concerning, but incidents like these are incredibly rare in Lancashire. We are taking this situation extremely seriously and conducting a thorough investigation with support from our specialist units,” said a Lancashire Police spokesperson.

“You will notice an increased police presence in the area as searches continue. If you have concerns, please speak to officers directly.”

Wider Manhunt Spreads Across Region

Cooper has known links to Blackpool and Bolton. Officers are collaborating with neighbouring forces, fearing he may try to travel beyond Lancashire.
