Mini Cooper Crash Reveals Shocking Drink and Drug Driving

Lukasz Kopania lost control of his Mini Cooper in Needlemakers, Chichester, in the early hours of February 20. The car smashed into a tree, leaving him unconscious and trapped in the wreckage.

A passerby rushed to help, pulling Kopania from the crash. He later woke and was taken to hospital, where blood tests revealed a double whammy — cocaine and alcohol well above the legal limits.

Blood Tests Show Dangerous Levels of Cocaine and Alcohol

The toxicology report stunned cops. Kopania’s blood contained 212 microgrammes per litre of benzolecgonine—the chemical from cocaine breakdown—more than four times the legal limit of 50mg. Alcohol levels were equally alarming at 115mg per litre, exceeding the 80mg legal limit.

Court Case: Kopania Admits Drink and Drug Driving

At Worthing Magistrates’ Court on September 20, Kopania, 40, a motor trade body repairer from Bognor, pleaded guilty to drink and drug driving offences. Sussex Police released footage to warn drivers about the deadly combo of booze and drugs behind the wheel.

“Kopania claimed he couldn’t remember driving,” said PC Steve Bucksey of the Roads Policing Unit. “But witness statements, CCTV, and forensic evidence proved otherwise.”

“He swerved wildly through Chichester town centre, putting innocent people at risk before crashing into a tree and losing consciousness.”

“A member of the public was quick to help and pull him from the wreckage, potentially saving his life.”

“Drink and drug driving remain top causes of fatal crashes. We’re determined to keep dangerous drivers off the roads.”

Sentencing: Kopania Faces Community Punishment and Driving Ban

  • 40 hours unpaid work
  • £95 victim surcharge
  • £85 court costs
  • 1-year driving disqualification

Police say Kopania was lucky not to have caused serious injury or worse that night.
