Wiltshire Man Jailed Over £52,000 Theft from Dementia-Stricken Parents
Ex-son steals from vulnerable parents
Brett Conway, 66, from Stanton St Quintin, Wiltshire, has been locked up for six years and eight months at Swindon Crown Court. He stole nearly £52,000 from his elderly parents between December 2017 and June 2018.
Conway targeted his father’s joint account—his father was suffering severe dementia—and used the cash supposedly for mortgage payments and home repairs. But investigators revealed the money instead wiped out over £75,000 of Conway’s credit card debt and funded lavish foreign holidays.
Campaign of threats after arrest
When his mother confronted him, Conway admitted the theft but refused to return the money, leaving her needing residential care due to the emotional toll. After being arrested, he launched a relentless intimidation campaign against his parents and ex-partner to scupper the investigation.
He drafted false retractions, spread vicious rumours about his ex, and threatened costly legal battles. His bullying tactics worsened the damage far beyond the financial loss.
Detective slams ‘brazen and bullying’ crook
“It’s very sad the victims have died before the matter was concluded at court but I am pleased Conway will now face justice,” said Detective Constable Rachael Fairbairn from the Complex Fraud Team.
Conway was convicted of two counts of theft and perverting the course of justice. Authorities are now moving to recover the stolen cash under the Proceeds of Crime Act.
