Fuel Theft Busted: Man Nabbed on A1 with Empty Cannisters
The Newark and Sherwood Operation Reacher team struck quick on Tuesday night, arresting a man caught red-handed with a van full of empty fuel cannisters on the A1 northbound slip road near Blyth.
Massive Haul Seized During Stop
- Empty fuel cannisters stacked in the back of the vehicle
- Large sums of cash discovered
- Gloves and mobile phones also confiscated
The 27-year-old man now faces suspicion of conspiring to steal fuel and being equipped for theft.
Operation Magna Cracks Down on Fuel Thieves
Launched in 2019, Operation Magna targets the relentless rise in fuel thefts along the A1 corridor, where offenders often trespass and cause damage to land.
Earlier the same evening, officers stopped another suspicious vehicle by lorries in a Carlton-on-Trent layby. No offences were found but occupants were given police advice.
Strong Words From Police
“We’ve seen a spike in fuel thefts along the A1 corridor,” said Bassetlaw District Commander, Inspector Hayley Crawford. “Operation Magna shows we’re working relentlessly to catch these criminals.
“Our enforcement acts as a warning: we’re ready, we’ll catch offenders, and deal with them robustly. Fuel theft and rural crime hit businesses and communities hard. With rising fuel prices, tackling these crimes is critical.”
