UK High Street in Turmoil: Claire’s Accessories and The Original Factory Shop plunge into administration, risking 2,500 jobs.

Claire’s and TOFS Collapse Sends Shockwaves

Claire’s Accessories and The Original Factory Shop (TOFS) have hit the skids, plunging into administration. Modella Capital’s rescue attempts have failed, putting 2,575 staff at risk across the UK and Ireland.

Claire’s faces threats to 1,355 jobs across 154 stores, while 1,220 TOFS workers at 140 stores face an uncertain future.

A Modella spokesperson said, “Very sadly, we have had to initiate insolvency proceedings for The Original Factory Shop (TOFS) and Claire’s Accessories UK & Ireland. Despite last-ditch rescue efforts, neither business can trade profitably again.”

High Street’s Dire Reality Hits Home

The spokesperson blamed legacy problems and a brutal retail environment for the collapses.

“The legacy effects of trading before our ownership left them highly vulnerable. The high street is facing huge challenges, echoed by plummeting pre-Christmas footfall. Weak consumer confidence, harsh government policies, and soaring costs are squeezing retailers hard.”

This is just the tip of a retail crisis iceberg. Many beloved names are in trouble as reduced profits push closures—and jobs—nationwide.

Claire’s and TOFS: What’s Next?

  • Claire’s first filed for administration notice in August; full administrator appointment expected soon.
  • Three Claire’s stores—Oxford Street West, Macclesfield, and Limerick—have already shut their doors.
  • Modella’s 2024 takeover salvaged just 150 Claire’s shops out of 280; the rest have closed.
  • TOFS filed for bankruptcy in the US before appointing UK administrators.
  • Modella also owns retail giants WH Smith and Hobbycraft, making it a powerhouse amid industry chaos.

Why Are High Street Stores Falling in 2025?

Claire’s has posted £25 million losses recently, battered by fierce online competition and changing shopping habits.

Sean Moran of Shakespeare Martineau points to the rise of fast-fashion titans Shein and Temu, plus Instagram and TikTok shopping platforms shaking up the fashion market.

“The fashion and accessories market is flooded with rivals. Online stores exploit import loopholes and price wars, making it impossible for traditional shops to compete. Trump’s tariffs and dwindling high street spending have created the perfect storm.”

Claire’s crisis isn’t isolated. M&S plans to shut 11 cafes during a £300 million revamp, and Amazon is closing all 19 of its London Amazon Fresh stores after just four years.

The UK high street faces a rocky road ahead without urgent change.
