A ruthless woman launched a shocking attack on a Central Line train, smashing a man’s phone and stealing £60 in cash. Now, Gloria Makanjuola has been locked up for her violent crime.
Attack on Late-Night Tube Leaves Victim Injured
On the night of 3 March 2023, the victim was quietly reading a newspaper on an eastbound train towards Hainault when Makanjuola, 35, from Ilford, sat beside him and demanded money.
- She rifled through his coat pocket, yanking out his phone and promising to return it if paid.
- When he tried to get the phone back, she snatched his wallet and dragged out £60 in cash.
- Makanjuola violently bent his fingers in a desperate attempt to keep hold of the loot.
Despite the savage attack, the man managed to run down the carriage and retrieve his smashed phone. Makanjuola then chased and tackled him near the train doors as the train pulled into Hainault station.
Swift Police Response Sees Thief Sentenced
After fleeing the station, the woman was caught thanks to quick actions by railway staff and members of the public who helped the injured victim. His phone was badly damaged, but the attack was swiftly reported.
On 19 February, Makanjuola pleaded guilty to assault and attempted theft at Woolwich Crown Court and was sentenced to nine months behind bars.
