Drunken passenger jailed for trying to open plane door mid-flight
Chloe Haines sparks terror on Jet2 flight
A 26-year-old woman has been slammed with a two-year prison sentence after attempting to open a plane’s emergency exit door while black-out drunk. Chloe Haines caused chaos on a Jet2 flight to Dalaman on June 22, 2019, turning verbally abusive and forcing the pilot to divert and land at Stansted Airport.
Flight forced to land as crew fight to stop her
Haines, from Loudwater’s Station Road, pleaded guilty to assault by beating and reckless endangerment at Chelmsford Crown Court. The terrifying drama unfolded mid-air when she tried to force open the emergency exit, sending passengers and cabin crew into a panic.
“This was a terrifying incident which left an entire plane, including experienced cabin crew members, in fear for their safety.” – Chief Inspector Lee Devall, Stansted Airport
Brave crew hailed for preventing disaster
Chief Inspector Lee Devall praised the cabin crew for their courage. “The crew put their lives at risk to stop the door being opened, despite being incredibly frightened. They showed immense bravery and should be commended,” he said.
PC Philip Darts, who led the investigation, was also thanked for gathering crucial evidence against Haines.
Warning to unruly, drunk passengers
“We will not tolerate dangerous or disruptive behaviour on flights,” Devall warned. “Haines has since apologised profusely and is mortified, but this case must serve as a warning: if you cause trouble after drinking before a flight, you will be arrested and face serious consequences.”
