999 Operator Calms Knife-Wielding Man in Tense Two-Hour Standoff
Sarah Steer, a 999 call handler with five years’ experience, faced a nerve-wracking crisis when an elderly man phoned to say his adult son was threatening harm with a carving knife. The caller revealed the son was clearly experiencing a serious mental health episode.
Quick Thinking and Calm Talking Saves Lives
Sarah immediately asked to speak with the troubled son. Using her skills, she built rapport and kept him talking. Within minutes, the man let his father walk away to safety.
After two intense hours on the line, Sarah’s calm voice helped the man to cool down. He told her he no longer wanted to hurt himself or anyone else. The man then peacefully surrendered to waiting officers.
