Police sprang into action after a Range Rover was snatched from outside a shop in Acomb, York – with the owner’s Doberman still locked inside.
Chopper and Stingers Join the Hunt
A quick-thinking member of the public dialled 999 at 4pm to report the theft. Officers used ANPR tech and a tracking device fitted to the vehicle to follow its every move.
Specialist units were scrambled, including roads policing officers, the National Police Air Service helicopter, and a police dog team.
Stinger Stops Thief After Wild Pursuit
Less than 30 minutes after the alarm, a stinger on the A163 at North Duffield punctured the stolen Range Rover’s tyres. Despite this, the driver kept going briefly before the car overturned in a nearby field.
Officers quickly detained the man inside. However, the terrified Doberman jumped from the wreck and bolted.
Helicopter Locates Missing Dog – Safely Returned to Owner
The NPAS helicopter tracked the frightened dog about half a mile away. Rescued and checked by a vet, the pooch is now safe and sound back with its owner.
Suspect Busted on Multiple Charges
The 29-year-old York man faces a lengthy list of offences, including aggravated vehicle theft, driving while disqualified, failing to stop for police, drug-impaired driving, dangerous driving, and driving without insurance.
He was taken to hospital for minor injuries before being locked up in police custody.
