From Volunteer to Full-Time Cop: Mason Beall’s Rise
Mason Beall has made the leap from volunteer special constable to fully-fledged police officer. After clocking an impressive 435 hours serving his community part-time, Mason passed out as a police constable on Friday, 14 April, following a tough 20-week training course.
Special Constables: The Volunteer Frontline
Special constables hold the same powers, responsibilities, and uniforms as regular officers but volunteer their time. They patrol crime hotspots, support intelligence-led operations, and drive crime prevention efforts — all while fitting it around their day jobs.
Mason’s dedication didn’t stop there. He also spent 97 hours as a police cadet leader in 2021/22, helping make communities safer before securing his full-time role.
Mason’s Dream Job Becomes Reality
Now part of the Response team at Kirkby police station, Mason is buzzing about his new career. He said:
“I was really happy to have been accepted to join Nottinghamshire Police full-time. I thoroughly enjoyed doing shifts when I could as a special, so being able to do it full-time and make a real difference is fantastic. “I wanted to join the police from a young age. A teacher who was a retired officer encouraged me to join as a cadet, which sparked my passion. It’s a varied job that truly lets you impact communities. “Every shift is different — the excitement, challenges and satisfaction are immense. I’m really looking forward to what the rest of my career brings.”
A Diverse Cohort Ready to Serve
Mason was one of 20 new police constables who graduated at the passing out parade at Nottinghamshire Police’s Arnold headquarters.
Trainer Oliver Pate praised the group, saying:
“They’ve performed exceptionally and supported each other throughout training. It’s great to see their results shine. “They range from 19 to 42 years old, with a mix of backgrounds including ex-firefighters, prison officers, detention officers, and special constables. A really strong, diverse team.”
