Drug Dogs and Police Crack Down on Thanet’s Nighttime Nuisance
Thanet’s streets got a serious police sweep on the evening of Saturday, May 28, 2022. Officers from the Thanet Multi-Agency Task Force hit hotspots at Broadstairs, Ramsgate, and Margate Train Station, hunting down drug users and anti-social troublemakers.
Drug-Detecting Dog Sniffs Out Suspects
Kent Police’s drug-sniffing dog Dougal teamed up with Kent Special Constabulary and British Transport Police at Margate Train Station. Their efforts led to several young people being reported for drug possession. A 27-year-old Ashford man was arrested on suspicion of drug possession with intent to supply and bailed until September 1.
Dougal didn’t stop there. The canine cop helped patrol Pierremont Park and Memorial Park in Broadstairs, stopping and searching people carrying suspected drugs. A dispersal order was slapped on Broadstairs parks after recent spats of anti-social behaviour. Groups of youngsters were removed, and police plan to contact parents and guardians to nip trouble in the bud.
Undercover Ops and Pub Patrols Keep Thanet Safe
Plainclothes officers operated in Broadstairs to catch more drug activity. Meanwhile, Ramsgate pubs and clubs, especially around High Street and Harbour Street, saw extra patrols to promote safer socialising.
“During the summer months, it is understandable that people want to spend a day or night out, and we see more people coming to Thanet to do so,” said Chief Inspector Matthew Smith, Thanet’s District Commander. “Most people do not cause any problems, but those who do can have an impact on others in the community. We remind people to socialise responsibly and with consideration for others.”
This summer, police will work closely with partner agencies, local businesses, and the public to keep Thanet safe and welcoming for everyone. PD Dougal remains on patrol, sniffing out trouble wherever it hides.
