Man in His 30s Dies After Police Visit Over Knife Incident in North London
Emergency services were called to a home in James Gardens, N22, at 8.07pm on Thursday, 22 July after a concerned member of the public reported a man acting erratically and armed with a knife.
The man, believed to be in his 30s, was in clear distress when officers arrived. Police tried to calm him before calling London Ambulance Service (LAS) for urgent medical help.
Police Apply Handcuffs to Prevent Harm
Fearing the man might injure himself or others, officers briefly handcuffed him to keep everyone safe. He was then rushed by ambulance to a north London hospital.
Tragically, his condition worsened, and he died at 6.56pm on Saturday, 24 July.
Family Supported as Investigation Kicks Off
The man’s family have been informed, and a liaison officer is supporting them through this difficult time.
The Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards and the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) have been notified as part of standard procedure.
Official Response: Investigation Underway
Chief Superintendent Treena Fleming, commander for policing in Haringey and Enfield, said:
“This was a very distressing incident, and our thoughts are with the man’s family and friends at this difficult time. A thorough investigation is ongoing to understand exactly what happened.
“Our officers responded to a call for help and intervened bravely in a tense situation. They prevented further injury, called for urgent medical aid, supported the family, and ensured no one else was hurt.
“I ask the public to avoid speculation. The IOPC are involved, which is standard in these cases. We will review all body-worn footage and gather statements from officers and witnesses. We are committed to transparency and will provide updates as soon as possible.”
