Eleven Guns Busted in County Down Crime Sweep
Police have seized a shocking cache of 11 firearms in County Down during a major National Crime Agency (NCA) crackdown on organised crime. The haul includes handguns, machine guns, machine pistols, and an assault rifle.
Buried Weapons Dug Up in Jerrettspass
The operation began around 4pm yesterday in a rural spot near Jerrettspass, Newry, with support from the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI). Officers unearthed a waterproof holdall buried underground containing three handguns and four machine guns.
Despite heavy rain and tough conditions, the search pressed on. A second, almost identical bag was found nearby, this time holding an assault rifle and three machine pistols. All weapons had magazines attached, with ammunition also recovered.
NCA Praise Major Firearm Find
David Cunningham, NCA Branch Commander, hailed the haul as, “a major success against those involved in serious and organised crime”.
“We believe this is the most significant find of serviceable firearms and ammunition in the area in 10 years. The weapons appear ready for use.”
“A detailed forensic exam will be carried out to identify handlers and trace the guns’ history. These automatic weapons are favoured by criminals to inflict serious harm and this seizure could save lives.”
“Working with PSNI and partners in the Organised Crime Task Force was vital. We’ll keep using all our shared expertise to bring those responsible to justice.”
Ongoing Investigation to Root Out Crime Network
Police say the discovery is a huge blow to organised crime gangs operating in Northern Ireland. The probe is ongoing with more arrests expected as officers close in on those behind the weapons stash.
