Brighton RNLI sprang into action at 2.18am on Sunday after reports of a man spotted in the sea near the Old Ship Hotel.

Just minutes after launching, the lifeboat was stood down at 2.34am. The coastguard confirmed police had rescued the man and taken him into their care.
