Brighton Police Under Fire After Two Arrests Spark Social Media Storm
Chief Superintendent Nick May has responded to viral videos showing two dramatic arrests in Brighton and Hove. The clips, shared widely online, capture tense moments from separate incidents that took place just days apart.
Hove Arrest: Man Stopped with Blades
On Friday, June 26, officers arrested a 22-year-old on York Road, Hove, after spotting him apparently hiding a large blade. A search found him carrying garden shears, two kitchen knives, and suspected stolen goods.
Brighton Arrest: Search for Missing Teen
The second incident happened on Tuesday, July 7, on Montpelier Road, Brighton. Police detained a 28-year-old while searching for a 17-year-old girl who was later found safe and unharmed.
Chief Superintendent Urges Public to See the Full Picture
“The videos show only a small part of much longer interactions,” said Ch Supt May. “Officers are trained to use reasonable, lawful force when faced with imminent risk and no alternative to defuse the situation.”
“We are reviewing all footage, including bodycam video, and have notified the Independent Office for Police Complaints (IOPC) for extra scrutiny on the latest case.”
“Our priority is fair and respectful policing that all communities can trust. We work closely with community groups to improve, but accept there’s always more to do.”
Both men have been released under investigation as police continue their inquiries.
