Brit Arrested in Thailand Over Fake Restaurant Reviews
Alexander Faces Jail for Online Smear Campaign
A British man named Alexander is in hot water after being arrested in Thailand for allegedly posting fake one-star reviews on an Italian restaurant. The stunt is said to have tanked the eatery’s rating from a stellar 4.8 down to a dismal 3.1 stars.
Revenge for Being Refused Service
Sources say Alexander was turned away from the restaurant for not being a paying customer. Furious, he reportedly rallied his mates to flood the venue’s online pages with negative feedback, sparking a police investigation after the owner claimed the ratings hit hurt their business badly.
Police Crack Down on Digital Defamation
On May 9, Thai police arrested Alexander at his Bangkok apartment. Authorities accuse him of “entering false computer data likely to cause damage to the general public,” an offence punishable by up to two years in prison under Thai law.
Police Major Jomparit Kaewreung of the Crime Suppression Division said: “The suspect was handed over to the inquiry officer of Sakhu Police Station for further legal action. During the interrogation, he has denied the charges.”
Legal Battle Looms for Brit in Phuket
Alexander was transferred back to Sakhu Police Station in Phuket, where he now awaits his fate. This case shines a spotlight on Thailand’s tough stance against online defamation and may set a precedent for cracking down on fake reviews in the future.
