Beware! ATMs Targeted in Sneaky Card Theft Scam
Several pensioners and shoppers in Kent have fallen victim to a crafty new scam at cash machines. Crooks are distracting users to swipe their bank cards, leaving victims clueless and out of pocket.
How the Scam Works
- Victims insert their card into the ATM.
- An accomplice approaches, claiming the machine isn’t working.
- While the victim is distracted, a second thief steals the card.
- Victims wrongly believe their card is stuck in the machine.
Recent cases hit Princes Avenue, Chatham; Knight Road, Rochester; and King Street, Gravesend. On 4 May alone, three cards were stolen at these locations. On 25 April, victims were targeted in Birling Avenue, Gillingham, and Rainham Shopping Centre, with some suffering cash losses.
Police Warn: Stay Alert at ATMs
“These offences are carried out by groups who strike for hours in one spot before moving on,” said Detective Inspector Pete Smith. “They target elderly or vulnerable people and work in pairs.”
“Be careful when using ATMs, especially those outside banks. Make sure no one is close enough to see your PIN. Don’t talk to strangers while withdrawing cash. If you feel threatened, call 999 immediately.”
