A construction worker was dramatically rescued after being trapped for over six hours when a large trench suddenly gave way in Charlton.
Trench Collapse in Bramshot Avenue
The incident happened on April 16 in Bramshot Avenue, where a trench about 12 metres long and 4 metres deep collapsed, burying the worker up to his waist in sand and clay. Emergency services rushed to the scene in a race against time.
Massive Rescue Operation Launched
- The London Fire Brigade deployed five fire rescue units plus specialised urban search and rescue teams.
- A towering 32-metre ladder was used to assist in the delicate extraction.
- Paramedics from the London Ambulance Service, including the Hazardous Area Response Team, arrived within five minutes and provided urgent medical care.
- Firefighters from East Greenwich, Eltham, and Bethnal Green joined the effort to stabilise the trench and prevent further collapse.
Worker Rescued and Rushed to Hospital
After a tense six-hour operation starting at 12:29 pm and ending at 6:47 pm, the trapped worker was successfully freed and taken straight to hospital for treatment.
The Metropolitan Police and Health and Safety Executive have taken control of the site to investigate what caused the dangerous collapse.
A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “The rescue showed excellent teamwork and a highly organised approach in safely extracting the trapped worker.”
The swift response and coordination between fire crews and paramedics were vital in this life-saving rescue.
