PM Faces Call to Outlaw Just Stop Oil After Dartford Chaos
MP Demands Crackdown on Environmental Activists
Gareth Johnson, the Tory MP for Dartford and ex-justice minister, slammed the eco group Just Stop Oil after their stunt at the Dartford Crossing last month sparked “days of chaos.” During Prime Minister’s Questions, Johnson pressed Rishi Sunak to ban the activists outright. “Will you outlaw this group so they can be treated as the criminal organisation they are?” he demanded.
Sunak Backs Police Action Against Disruptive Protests
The PM voiced full support for the police tackling “reckless and illegal” demonstrations. He pointed to the upcoming Public Order Bill, saying it will give officers the powers needed to clamp down on disruptive protests.
Just Stop Oil’s Growing Mayhem Sparks Fury
Just Stop Oil has ramped up direct action tactics, targeting oil projects, artworks, and major roads. Last month’s Dartford Crossing takeover caused major delays, while attacks on the M25 and cultural sites added to public misery.
“These people are criminals, not protesters,” Johnson said. “They cause chaos, put lives at risk, and wreck everyday life.”
The Home Secretary can proscribe groups under the Terrorism Act 2000 if they’re linked to terrorism and it’s deemed proportionate. Johnson’s call puts fresh pressure on the government to consider that move against Just Stop Oil.
