Scam Alert: Fake Police Officer Targets Elderly in Bolton
Greater Manchester Police have been hit by a spate of cunning phone scams. Between April 4 and June 15, ten incidents were reported, all seemingly linked. The con artist poses as ‘PC/DC Matthew Philips’ with collar number 5772, tricking victims into handing over thousands.
Victims Urged to Stay Vigilant
The scammer cold-calls elderly residents from Bolton areas like Little Lever, Horwich, and Westhoughton. He claims there is a serious fraud investigation and demands victims withdraw large sums, from £2,000 up to a staggering £70,000. A claimed ‘colleague’ then collects the cash, often dressed in tracksuit bottoms and a hoody.
Sadly, in two cases over £6,000 was handed over before victims realised the truth.
Police Hunt Fraudster, Appeal for Info
“Impersonating a police officer is illegal, but doing so to defraud innocent members of the community is a heinous crime,” says Detective Sergeant Robert Parker. “We are doing everything we can to catch whoever is responsible.”
“No genuine officer will ever randomly call you asking to withdraw money. If in doubt, always ask for ID and call 101 or 999 in emergencies.”
“If you suspect you’ve been targeted or have information, please contact us online or via 101.”
